Stark State fuel cell center getting $1 million
CantonRep.com staff report

The Fuel Cell Prototyping Center at Stark State College of Technology will get $1 million to upgrade its "clean room."

Announcement of the funding was made Monday by U.S. Rep. John Boccieri (D-Alliance), who worked with other members of the Appropriations Committee to include funding for the project in the Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill.

"The fuel-cell technology research at Stark State is helping lay the foundation for America's energy independence and a new energy economy," Boccieri said in a statement. "Ohio is uniquely positioned to be at the forefront of the new energy revolution with investments in alternative energy systems like this right here in our district."

Upgrading the clean room allows for testing at an earlier part of the process, and could create 10 jobs at the center. Stark State partners with Rolls Royce Fuel Cell Systems to develop and commercialize a one-megawatt solid-oxide fuel cell.

The bill passed the full House and will head to the Senate Appropriations Committee before going to the full Senate for a vote.
