Today, more than ever, businesses realize
the need for an educated and well-trained work force. As firms
face the challenge of increasing production while reducing
costs, they have found that intelligent workers provide the
ultimate edge for success.
Canton/Stark
County has a rich tradition in education, offering educational
opportunities to fit every need. In Stark County almost 50%
of high school graduates go on to two or four year colleges;
many attend technical or community colleges. The high school
graduation rate is 88%, which is higher than the State average
of 84.7 %.
The Canton/Stark County area is home to 17 public school
districts, educating over 70,500 students each year. There
are also 29 parochial and private schools in the area. All
high schools in the Stark County area offer vocational and
college prep tracks. Stark County has one school dedicated
completely to vocational education. Also, the County has a
special school for the mentally retarded.
Stark County’s emphasis on educational excellence is
reflected in student test performance. In this respect, student
test scores in Stark County compare favorably at the national
level.
In addition to Stark County's strong elementary and secondary
educational network, there are three liberal arts colleges,
two major universities, one branch campus and one technical
college in the area.
The coeducational liberal arts colleges that are located
in the area are: Malone
College, located at 515 25th Street, N.W., Canton; Walsh
University, located at 2020 Easton Street, N.W., Canton;
and Mount Union
College, located at 1972 Clark Ave., Alliance.
Kent
State University in Kent, Ohio, and the University
of Akron in Akron, Ohio, are major state universities
servicing the area. Kent State has a branch
campus located in Canton.
Stark
State College of Technology, located next to the Kent
Stark campus, provides two-year technical training to
more
than 7,660 students.
